Does anyone combine blackjack with throughbred races? By combine, I mean engage in both at relatively regular intervals? I originally started playing thoroughbreds in race books as a diversion, and in the past couple of years it has attained almost equal status with blackjack. I know that a lot of players combine poker and blackjack, and I am curious how many also wager on horse races. It seems a natural combination for me. Good Luck
I don't think so Reachy, Traynor is a Senior Member at the sister site Blackjackinfo.com with 152 posts and regularly posts about horse races. This was a legitimate question and post.
Apologies Traynor - My apologies for the slur. The link at the bottom of your post looked like it was advertising a paid-for service hence the confusion. Cheers Reachy
No apology necessary. The link is to free samples that are posted daily, no fee, no hassle, and LOTS of winners. Several members on the blackjackinfo forum expressed an interest in thoroughbreds, and I post full cards there as often as time permits (usually a couple of days a week). Yes, we have a paid rating service. However, it is designed and maintained for professionals (meaning full-time, usually wagering $50 and up on 10 to 30 races a day, pretty much every day). We provide a lot of free stuff to novices, hobby bettors, and others who want to give it a try. The daily free samples are one of that lot. Apologies for not explaining more fully up front. In truth, we are not actively soliciting new professional subscribers, because more subscribers equals less money in payoffs for the existing subscribers. We have already shut off new subscriptions for professional subscriptions to harness and greyhound ratings, and will probably shut off the thoroughbred subscriptions in the near future. All I offer is the free information, and whatever help, advice, or information I can provide to other players interested in taking an occasional break from the tables. If you want to really put a blanko in a pit crew's collective brains, try sitting with an associate and playing black while keeping up a non-stop dialogue about the seventh race at Belmont or Santa Anita. It will block them permanently from considering you as anything to be worried about, no matter how much you win, or how often. Good Luck
Traynor, I combine blackjack with throughbred races. Yes, I can use the free information, and whatever help, advice, or information you can provide. Oak Tree in Santa Anita just started as you are aware. HELP.
Working on the SA races now. Should have some selections posted in an hour or so. If you want to check the free samples we had posted today, they are still up. First races at however many, I think 7 or 8 tracks. The first race at SA we had posted as 6-3-5-1. Finish was 6-5-1. However, because the 5 paid $11.40 to place, the exacta paid $73.00, and the trifecta $350. Good Luck
This may seem a bit long in the answer department! In any event, a few caveats; we try to avoid chalk, and it is a trade-off between occasional higher mutuels and lower win percentage. Selections are intended to provide value, rather than a lot of $3 winners. If you have time, take a quick look at some of the stuff on our website that explains how to use these ratings. If you are not familiar with them, they may be a bit different than you are accustomed to seeing. Greyhounds? I play BJTournaments and Greyhounds - put myself through two years of college (long time ago) with greyhound profits - anyone else play dogs?
To the great surprise of many horseplayers, a LOT of people play greyhounds. Greyhounds are almost mechanical in play; once you figure out a way to select entries that will finish forwardly, and learn how to wager, the potential is almost unlimited. What tracks do you play, and what kind of approach do your use (computer, point method, speed analysis, class analysis, etc.)? If you are interested in greyhounds, we have a lot to talk about. Ever play Australia or the UK? Good Luck traynor
Greyhounds I play Phoenix, Miami Circuit, Tampa Circuit, Jacksonville Circuit, and Southland, as those tracks are offered by my local simulcast site (Yuma)- and I can get ROSNET data on them - Miami and Tampa are also the ones most race books offer - also play Palm Beach, Dairy Land, Corpus Christi, & Wheeling, when I can - follow a lot of tracks - when I am playing dogs - only ROSNET tracks I do use a computer - to process through the ROSNET data - and give me something easier to work with than regular track programs - mostly what I look for are dogs that can get clear out of the box - with at least ok performance afterwards - to win - and any faster dogs in the race having a chance to be blocked or impeded out of the box - then - of course - look at odds - and look for dogs that have a little finish or the best break - to finish second - mostly play exactas - hit about 30% of my races - covering thrtee, four, five combos each race - usually one, two, or three betting races per track each night - sometimes with good odds - tough to make much money - as the 'bet my license plate numbers' people are now all in the Indian casinos playing slots - the real fans all have some handicapping skills - and pools are real small - so big bets shift the odds easily - betting on clearance gives a different take on the race - so not duplicating those handicappers who bet speed/class/break/etc - so can get odds wile winning the same percentage of races - only way to make money is to bet a different approach - I figure - seems to work - also use this approach for Pick-3s and Pick-4s - and have hit those ok -
First piece of advice (that applies in a lot of situations); zig when everyone else is zagging. Lots of people get race data from Rosnet because it is free, and most (if not all) applications are written for Rosnet data. Try Pico. It only costs $83.40 a year, and you get several tracks that Rosnet doesn't cover. Consider that most apps use Rosnet data. Most computer handicappers use Rosnet data. What does leave handicapping the tracks that Rosnet doesn't cover? Just an idea, because we have found that the most profitable tracks (most consistent, best mutuels, best exactas, best trifectas) are not covered by Rosnet. It is possible they may be simulcast in Yuma. Next question: You say you use a computer. Does that mean you parse your own data, or are you using a commercial application? Good Luck traynor
computer I use a spreadsheet I created - download the ROSNET data into it - then it processes the data into a form I can use easily - put it into a comparative form - how the dogs in a race compare to each other - adjusting for grade and post position - looking to compare 'typical' performances - break, runup, speed, finish - i don't think it is so much the source of the data as it is what you do with it - everyone looks at class - speed - break - I look at 'clearance' - can a dog get out clear given the dogs around it - that is a different approach - and in a greyhound race - clearance is the most important factor - my opinion
Second piece of advice; if you are parsing your own data, it should be fairly easy create a macro to extract the winner's time, and put it into a secondary file by track and grade. If you play marathons, you will need a separate file for marathons. After a month or two, average the times, divide by the number of races to get a track-specific, grade-specific, distance-specific par time. If you want to do it properly, correct for outliers (unusually fast or unusually slow times that would distort the average). Once you have a "par time" for every race, evaluate each subsequent race in relation to the par time. Some nights will be faster than normal, some slower. The differences will be obvious and relatively consistent. Then write a macro to combine the daily variant (the averages of the deviations from par for the day, again corrected for outliers) with ART of any greyhound subsequently running with that date in its PP lines. If you are using a spreadsheet, all it takes is creating a few macros. It will give you a ton of information that others do NOT have, and put you on a lot of decent mutuels that are actually "best in the race." Good Luck traynor
Santa Anita Results I have no idea how this happened. I thought I had posted the results right after the last race, but when I looked at the thread again, it wasn't there. Minor detail I forgot to mention that the rolling Pick 3 for the 7th, 8th, and 9th races returned $1300 for a $2 bet. That is, the top choices (PR-1) won in each of the races--no wild lacing or $800 bets--just a simple $2 ticket on the top choices in the three races. Good Luck traynor
