    Hi KG,
I'm new to the BJ Tourney circuit. Noticed your flyer for the Aces & Faces tournament in September. Tourney is "Opened to Invited Guests Only". How does someone receive an invite to an upcomming tournament? Thanks in advance

I might be speaking out of turn. But at this point I don't care. What sense is there for posting an invite tourney on this site. Especially with such a small payout. The number of BJT site members who have stayed or played at TI over the years to get an invite has to be small. And for the payout I'm certainly not going to try to establish a playing qualification there when other Vegas sites with regularly higher tourneys attract my qualifying play. Or there are venues that offer higher payouts that one would attempt to qualify for. SO. Just sayin. OPEN invite might attract new playas to venue.

  6. Hi Rodney,

By having a gaming history on our Table or Slots, its based on your theoretical play. If you do play at another Casino other than us at TI, I can make some calls to the other Las Vegas strip properties to determine your history with them. If you have any questions or concern feel free to email or call me kgarcia@treasureisland.com (702.277.7985).

    Respectfully,
    Ken Garcia

  8. Hi Noman,

This is not our highend BJ event, I am here to promote the all cash event to new or existing members that may qualify for this event. Keep in mind anyone can play in this event, the key part of this event is to bring new and loyal patron. If you have any questions or concern feel free to call me at 702.277.7985. Thank you for your concern.

    Respectfully,
    Ken Garcia

Mr Garcia, yes, bring new and loyal patrons. But not with 15,000 first and stated invite only, unless as you state CALL you to see if you approve. If you want new patrons who will be loyal you'll have to up the ante and make it open entry with reasonable buy-in. Many Blackjack tournament players are not HIGH ROLLERS, but appreciate a competitive event with appropriate buy-in to payout. A guaranteed prize pool attracts more. Even based on entries. To pull players who enjoy the competition for a reasonable payout and thus give YOU side play, you'll have to think of a guaranteed higher payout to attract anyone form outside Las Vegas. Just sayin. Review history of Stardust, Frontier, Riviera and former Hilton. Everyone else offers their best customers a carnival event as a reward as standard practice.
Currently look at Orleans and Golden Nugget for pretty much OPEN higher stakes events. There are others I'm sure, but I can't hit every "Entertainment" group to build "play" So I'll stay in Midwest with three to five regularly scheduled events. Expanding some day to the Gulf for those events. In short, it's gotta be more mula and easier to enter. But I wish you well with your 120 entrants and when it gets appropriate I hope I can try the TI, if I haven't burned the gang plank.

I agree with norman. Invitation only events will not attract new players. A hybrid might work well. So, it would be an open event but the fee is waived with certain level of play.

    KG,
Thanks for the reply. It appears I may have opened a can of worms with my inquiry. Nothing wrong with a little "Open" debate. Case in point...the reason WSOP is so popular I beleive is because any ordinary "Joe" can take a shot at the title...YO ROCKY!! I would love for the BJ tourney circuit to addapt the same "Take a shot at the title" feel. Hey guys, I'm no fool I am no where in your league--I freely admit that, but reaching for the stars is something we all aspire to. So once again KG, any chance sometime in the future that us little guys might be given a chance to play the cards we've been dealt...at an "Open" BJ Tournament? Thanks again.

Will you be at Buffalo Run next weekend? If so, I'd like to meet you (same for The_Professional, if he's there).
As an aside, Orleans tournaments can't really be called higher stakes and open anymore because the advertised purses are based on 180 entrants and most recent events have paid substantially less as a result. Not meaning to be disagreeable with you, but they really can't be called "open events" either.
Hope to meet you next weekend if you're in OK!

I will be the guy with lots of arrows in my back, but I want to express an alternate view here.

If open blackjack tournaments brought in enough profitable customers to make a noticeable increase in casino profits, then most casinos would still offer them.
Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, there were lots of open events paying $100K or more for first place. Over the years, casinos found that these events were not profitable for them.

I love to point out that casinos in general are massively mismanaged (thank heavens! :D).
The bean counters that are in charge these days seem to barely understand the real business of gambling.
But for a simple analysis of which events increase profit and which do not, they are likely very competent.

Could open blackjack events be handled better and be successful? Of course. But it takes a vision (Buffalo Run maybe?), and someone really devoted to their success.
For most properties, it is so much easier to just have a slot tournament and invite in the lambs to be sheared.

As usual, our fearless leader here at BJT.com is correct on all counts. Although they were before my time in this game, nearly all of those former BigBucks BJT's were run as loss leaders intended to coax gamblers in the door to lose their shirts on the casino floor while in the building for the tournament. Not a good idea, too many wouldn't play much (or at all) and the house would lose $$$. Bye-bye BJT's.

It's been said here before. To be profitable for the house, a BJT must be run as poker tournaments usually are with a built-in vig to the house. Not a usurious 20%+ as was recently attempted at Motor City in Detroit but something more reasonable. 10% would be fine by me. Then the house could make some $$$ from the event itself without holding their breath to see if the players will gamble.

Far too many casino tournament bean counters and promoters view BJT's in the same sad light as slot tournaments, they are mostly promotional rewards for their players who are rated high enough to be invited. This is why the majority of events are invitationals and we have damn few decent open-entry tournaments to play. On top of all that, many alleged open tournaments are rigged to benefit the rated players - including the one in this thread's original post because it looks like the wild card drawing will be stacked in favor of those who play bigger on the casino floor during the time the tournament is happening. You don't see that kind of favoritism in a poker tournament - ever.

One other thing must change in order for a promoter to succeed with a BJT featuring open entry. The antiquated practice of awarding 50% (or more!) of the entire prize fund to one person has to stop. 25% is plenty, one-third at the most. Giving such a huge percentage of the prize fund to one person creates many more losers than something more reasonable. More losers = more players who become discouraged and quit altogether.

Who am I to make such claims and suggestions? Just a guy who knows a little about BJT's, and a whole trainload about promoting competitive events. My business partner and I started with an idea about running bowling tournaments here in Michigan a few years back and we are now the biggest in the entire state. BJT's are not bowling, obviously, but most of the principles we follow would transfer very well.

Well that about covers it. Agree Buffalo Run is a forward step. It's an open event attracting new players to an up and coming venue. The more established "entertainment" conglomerates compete with each other on a different marketing plane. Lefty makes a solid point re reasonable profit for "house." Strange in a way that the live money tourneys of long ago had built in profit from entry fee plus take from the tournament table play. Oh well if you can't find a good BJ tourney, pick a house, give them play with your non event stay and wait for the invite to a slot tourney. You may get lucky.

    LeftNut,
Thanks for the clarification about BJT's and why there are so few "Open" events for us "little" guys. Well I guess that about does it. I'm not very good at Poker, don't play Slots, not very good at Bowling, can't stand Ping Pong, etc, etc. My one and only vice has always been Black Jack! Tornaments are few and far between. I live in Colorado, so traveling to an out of state BJ Tourney event via plane or bus would not be very cost effective for me, but I'll keep looking! Anyway keep the information flowing, much luck to you all and hey who knows....?....there's always horse racing. Thanks again.

In looking at my earlier post, I want to apologize to Mr. Garcia because it sounds like I was slamming him and his tournament, this was not my intent at all. We always appreciate being notified here of any BJT's! It is a head-scratcher as to "why" since it's an invitational but we still appreciate it. Again, my apologies.

Agree that Buffalo Run is a huge step in the right direction, I certainly hope it begins to attract heavy participation and possibly encourage other venues to test the waters with similar events. If they are done right, it is my strong belief that the demand can be created to make BJT's a profitable venture for the host casinos and increase the number of attractive events for all to play.
