I couldn't play in the local tournament last night, but showed up in time to watch the last 15 hands of the finals. There were obviously some smart players there, and one guy who had very little strategy and a ton of good luck - for example, he had a big lead over the rest of the table, but kept betting medium sized bets, losing, and by last hand, he was in 2nd place.

On the final hand, these were the chip totals

    405
    665
    640

    The first player bet 400
The leader had to bet next, and bet the table max at 500
Last to bet was the 'lucky guy', and his bet was 350

Seems to me that lucky guy bet too much - wouldn't it have been better to bet half of his chips and hold onto the rest for a double possibility?

Ends up that the dealer had blackjack, and cleaned the table - and yes, 'lucky guy' won.

But what do you think these players should have bet? Thanks!

    ********

    P1 405 400--- 5 in reserve (5,405,805,1005,...)
    P2 665 500---165 in reserve (165,665,1165,1415,...)
    P3 640 ?

My newbie analysis first would want to have 170+ in reserve with resulting bet range 5-470.

Win/push coverage bumps it up to 30.
Win/win over P1 bumps it up to 170.
    Win/blackjack P1 bumps it up to 370.

You say this is dealt up (6 deck), which gives alot more info for the double downs.

To me it seems more important covering the 1/21 chance of a P1 blackjack than a spliting situation, so I would bet 370-470 and not 320.

    ****
P3 is likely to double down, but when would P2 double down or just play "no bust" strategy when the cards are up?

I agree with your call on player #3 KC, he did make a bad bet. I would have played it the following way. With both players betting in front of me I would know I needed to keep $170 back to win the low. Now I would bet the rest ($470) getting to watch the action in front of me I would know what #2 had done and if I needed to double to beat them, but no more then $160 to keep the 2nd place with the low on #1 should I we both lose.

This is how I would have played it, others might disagree.

    My Bet

I think I would bet $265 if I were player 3. The double downgives me the high unless player two doubles which I could not cover anyway.

6 one way, half a dozen the next.

Moses is right by betting at least $265, that way he could double or split possible ending up with $1,170, $5 more then player #2 if they win their $500 bet.

His way covers both double down, splits, and low.

Mine would cover double down, a blackjack, and low.

Both ways are good, like I say play the way your most comfortable, right or wrong it is your money.
