Can anyone give me some idea as to what to expect as far as format? How does a super rebuy work? Are the wildcards into the semis or qtr finals? Number of decks, etc. Thank you.
The format is elimination style. Rebuys are available in the first round; and super rebuys are available to those who advance in round one, but do not advance in round two. Two advance from each table up to the semi-finals where only one advances from each semi-final table to the finals. There are wildcards into every round after the first. Each round is twenty hands of double deck.
2 of 6 players advance from rounds 1,2,and 3. 1 of 5 advance from round 4 to the final table. A super rebuy is available if you made it to round 2 but did not advance further; the super rebuy lets you play round 2 over again (rather than start over from round 1). If you do not advance from round 1 and do not do a rebuy you have no chance for a wild card. To be eligible for a wild card you must advance from round 1 or have rebuyed round 1. ......................................................................BlueLight
I wasn't at this one but have been to numerous GN BJT's in the past. Very well run events although there can be a hiccup at times - an occupational hazard for any competitive event manager. Having said that, the entry fee(s) does not cover your room unless you've got a solid history of giving action there.
I went on Friday night to read the rules before shelling out my registration fee. I figured I would have to rebuy or super rebuy and get lucky on a wildcard to make final table. (I count on a few of the comped players to be weak.) One of the rules caused me to walk away, though. They allow substitute players. This may be common, but I don't have big tournament experience and have not run into this before. I need every edge I can get, and taking away the ease of moving past the first round changes the value for me.
I hear your concern and it is quite unusual rule. I have played GN event many times and never heard of anyone actually using this feature. My guess people who are comped in like to have the fun of play. That is how they get comped in, in the first place. My observation, however, is not scientific. So, others might correct me. Having said that, there was an earlier discussion of the value of this tournament. It was estimated that each player pays $1050 on average for registration and re-buys and the expected value is much less. The casino makes money out of paying players.
I played it once and plan to make it a regular stop. I hope to work my way toward being comped in. When I played it last year, I heard about the sub player. This wasn't of major concern to me, but it's different for sure. Thanks for the posts!
. Update on substitutes. Found a couple of substitutes. Both were spouses of the invited guest. The invited guest was a slot player uncomfortable playing in the tournament. I went back to GN in January and played in the tournament. It was tremendous fun. I froze on last hand in semis and did not make final table as a result of my error. Will definitely play again.
