The Silent Majority...?

Discussion in 'Sidewalk Cafe' started by Blackjack Rebel Too, May 13, 2010.

  1. I was just looking at our statistics and see that we have over 12K members. Even with that large a user base, we still have multiple forums with no posts for weeks (or months) at a time. I am as guilty as anyone about not posting as much but my curiosity is awake now and I am wondering if anyone has any insights to why we have such a diminishment in discussion these days.

What is The Silent Majority's opnion?

    If you look closely the eight forums without recent posts are;

    Blackjack Tournaments Canada
    Blackjack Tournaments Europe
    Blackjack Tournaments Other Areas
    Blackjack Tournaments Cruise Ship
    Ultimate Blackjack Tour
    World Series of Blackjack
    Tournament Blackjack Player's Association
    Newbie Corner

Posts are being made to forums that are relevant to members interests.

  3. True enough and those forums have never been all that active but what should be one of the most active forums (Blackjack Tournaments USA) has it's five most recent threads with last post dates of Today (May 14) , May 3, May 2, May 2, and April 29.

It isn't just here either. There has been a downturn in posts on just about every Las Vegas or gambling board I frequent. I was just curious about people's thoughts on the matter and figured a discussion might help generate some activity.

Become proactive starting threads and not waiting for others to begin a discussion, I'm sure you'll receive comments to any posts interesting to other bjt.com members.

It appears you want to read and respond to other member posts (comments) rather than offering a subject post.

    It Comes and Goes

Posting on this forum has had its ups and downs over the years. Lately it's been quiet. It'll pick up again, probably in the days and weeks leading up to a major event.

With the Great Recession there's been a curtailment of blackjack tournaments, so that's probably part of the reason this site has been quieter than before. When the economy comes back, so will the blackjack tournaments and with them the traffic on this site.

The Monkey is right. Things heat up here when there is something like a big BJT to discuss. Witness the activity here two summers ago when Winstar was running that massive tournament. There simply aren't any really good ones to discuss, most of the ones that would create activity here are invitationals and only a precious few of us get the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket to participate. Lately, most of the chatter seems to be about BJT's in the upper Midwest such as Ignace or Meskwaki.

I have been accused (in a friendly way) of posting too much here, as if trying to turn this into my personal sandbox - or soapbox! Not true. Ironically, I'd likely post less if there was more activity. All I'm trying to do is create some interest in BJT.com, and others have attempted the same thing. Posts such as that long "Cheers & Jeers" regarding the last Meskwaki event are a pain in the (backside) to create and wouldn't happen if this site was busier.

    Lack of Posting:

If I really had something to say, I would. Regardless of being afeerd that Ken would be miffed about not understanding what I was trying to say and as a result be "mad" at me. To be explicit, that's supposed to be a joke.

Haven't been able to make tourneys. So there's little comment there. Been reading the sister site and have become impressed with a couple folks over there. And ah shucks, there is something I have to share, this being the "anything else," section.

As fortune, would have it, I'm sitting at the bar playing video poker, minding my own business and sipping on my own beer at the Horseshoe in Council Bluffs, Ia, just the other day. This fella comes up to me and strikes up a genial conversation. Yadda, yadda, yadda. During the course of the conversation, he informs me that P****** away quarters at video poker is not the way to go and throws a wad down on the bar to prove it. Seems, he plays $5 a pop in the high roller slots cubicle. Now, playing two "coins" for ten is the max, but his play is just $5. He just won $1,200 doing that and he's done it quite a bit. He knows how them machines work. And you tinkle them with just the $5 bet. Heck his wife has won gabazillions and he's on his way, after about 5 successful forays. Asking me, if I'm an honest man, he has a proposition to prove he's correct. Now I know right off he's no "machinest" but I listen anyway, irritated somewhat that I'm not getting enough sips per minute out of my beer and there's $47.50 credit remaining on the machine, that I'm not massaging

Here's his prop. He'll give me $100 to go with him to the high stakes cubicle, if I promise to play just $5 a pop in the machine he tells me to. He's going to play too at another, or other machines. He'll tell me when to leave the machine and try another. All I have to promise is that whatever I hit, I split 50-50 with him. All this to show his expertise on slots and who knows, maybe something else. I say "How can I refuse."

So he says to seal the deal, he'll buy me another beer, so we can warm up to the action. Tosses me $20 and a pack of Marlboro Reds, hard pack. "What's the $20 for?" Good faith.

Well I'm so escited, I don't finish the beer there, I testify, "Let's go"

We take our beers to the cubicle. He gives me the $100, tells me to start at a certain machine and we start punching away. In one minute I move to another machine and he's been at five. In two minutes the original $100 is gone and he gives me another. Between us we play all 20 or 30 machines in the cubicle, and I think I got a return of $20 twice. In five minutes $400 of the $1,200 bankroll is gone and he proclaims, that the machines must a got hit and are tired out. We retire to the bar for another beer, which he doesn't finish, cause all of a sudden he's light headed since he hasn't eaten and wanders away to find a restaurant.

Now there's more than a couple a lessons in there. But most importantly, be careful what you wish for, especially about a lack of posting.

I am sure he has a fool-proof blackjack betting system! Probably has something to do with the flow of the cards? How you need a "strong" player at 3B to anchor the table. That guy needs to take his hits! It all depends on what the "anchor" does!

I love watching slot players operate. Players card in, then out, then back in again. Ticket in, ticket out, ticket in again. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

    What’s Going On?

At the bottom of the message board it says “Most active users ever online was 225 on the 4th April 2008 at 05:10 A.M.”

I decided to have a look back in the threads to see what members were posting about then and why the site was so popular at that time.

The problem is when you go back to previous posts on here you start to re-read them and all the history and nostalgia comes flooding back (highly recommended). The posts around the demise of Global Player Casino were particular poignant.

Anyway, a couple of hours after reading the posts on BJT I forgot what my original quest was.

So if anyone one here can tell me.

What was happening on here on the 4th April 2008 at 05:10 A.M?

    Winstar?

That's the right time frame for the monthly Winstar tournaments, leading up to the BIGGIE.

Tomlw is right. Winstar ran 5 monthly "qualifier" tournaments and that date is right around the beginning of it all.
