New to Iowa Anyone care to give this newbeeee a run down of the tourney? Rules, special rules, starting bankroll, betting limits, number of hands/rd? Did not see anything besides, elimination format, re-buy and some prize info on the game listing. Thanks, Dan
Strange rule Looks like Lefty took good care of you on this. The one "really strange" rule Meskwaki has is that insurance bets can be made up to an equal amount of initial bet, rather than the typical "up to 1/2 of bet". Billy C
strange rule Insurance is a bad bet in basic strategy and this strange rule lets you bet twice as much on it. If your strategy is to save your chips then don't bet it. I like to insure bj's so I might bet half on it as usual in that case.
dealers' compensation dealers are toked 5.5% out of the prize pool per sara. so if anyone is lucky to be in the money, might take this in consideration.
Will it fill? I just got off the phone with Sandy (at Meskwaki). She said they are 44 people short of a "full" tourney as of now. Late locals will hopefully fill it or get it close to full. Billy C
Hmmmmm, not a good sign Oh, boy. That's only a field 80% filled with two days to go. They're likely going to have to run it "short" or fill it with comped locals (which would completely negate the intention of the increased entry fee). Hope I'm wrong on both counts.
In the past they have guaranteeed the first place prize but the rest of the purse was based on a full field, adjusted accordingly if it didn't fill up.
Hail hail the gang's all here! They improved their way of handling no shows and reassigned players to even out the numbers at the tables. Just about every bjt'er here advanced to Sunday. There were 178 out of a Max 224 players in the tournament.
Kudos! Congratulations to LeftNut for making the final table and taking 4th place in this semiannual event. Good job Lefty!!!!! Billy C
WTG LEFTY!! anybody that makes it to finals in a 5 round tourament needs skil & luck, (i came up short in both) glad you made it, want to hear details of last round asap.
Thanks, guys! Yeah, it was a decent weekend, fer sure. Will post more later including answering SweetWilliam's request for final round summation - but came home to find a sh**storm at work so have two long days ahead. I'll also start working up a Cheers-n-Jeers due to massive numbers of requests for it even though I had decided against same during the lonnnnnng drive to Iowa. "The skill is to have yourself in position to take advantage of Lady Luck when she smiles on you" - my tagline here on BJT.com and a pretty accurate description of my weekend!
Nightmare I have to share with you the Meskwaki nightmare I had this morning. First, some background information. At the Meskwaki casino patrons are not allowed to carry drinks from the casino to the hotel, or from the hotel to the casino. It doesn't matter what kind of drink, not even a styrofoam cup of weak hotel coffee can cross. They post a uniformed security guard at a podium at the border line between the hotel and casino. This drink nazi stops everyone with drinks and either makes them finish their drink on the spot or throw it away in a trash receptacle positioned right there in front of the guard's podium. It's the Berlin Wall of coffee. I suppose it's to enforce some bizarre clause about alcohol in the gaming compact, insisted upon by a holy roller politician. Now, the nightmare. Sunstar888 and I were in the area near the coffee Berlin Wall and sat down on some comfortable chairs in front of a fireplace, right by the drink nazi podium (the real Meskwaki has no fireplace in that area, but the nightmare Meskwaki does.) To my right, some youngish guy was innocently walking past the drink checkpoint, and was stopped by the drink nazi. He was told to finish his drink or dump it out. Instead, when he thought the drink nazi wasn't looking, he handed it to me hoping he could smuggle it across in this manner. So there I was, sitting in front of the fireplace with a contraband drink - a bubbling green soda. Of course the drink nazi caught me and was joined by two other jack booted storm troopers. They started pulling on my shoulders and tilting my chair back to arrest me for my role in smuggling contraband soda - what a horrible misunderstanding! I struggled heavily to avoid spilling the green soda on myself as they pulled me backwards, tilting my chair back to the point of falling over backwards. At this point I woke up, avoiding the remainder of the nightmare, which undoubtedly would have included a trip to the soda back room.
Sweet William, I totally forgot that you asked for a synopsis of the final table! Two of the 7 players were bombers, one busted out early but the other couldn't do anything wrong. He built up an huge lead but couldn't take his foot off the gas. The rest of us just kept jockeying for chip position. Late in the round, Bomber inexplicably bet about 1/4 of his stack, then got pounded on a DD to drop back in the pack. Last hand, 6 left, I'm BR2 with a one-chip lead over the first bettor (BR3) and I have next-to-last bet. He bets enough to overtake BR1's push. BR6 is next and short-stacked badly, all in. BR1 bets big. BR5 bets big. After much consideration, and realizing that Bomber will bet after me and will probably blast in again, I match BR3's bet to take the low on the entire table assuming Bomber's big bet (which he does). I don't remember exactly how it went down, but BR1 got a 2:1 BJ and immediately locked up the $20,000. If the dealer makes 20 or 21, I get second, but she makes 19 and beats my 18 while BR3 and Bomber push with 19 and I drop to fourth. Dammit.
