I just heard the World Poker Tour is moving from the Travel channel to GSN. Now with the WPT joining GSN's highly successful High Stakes Poker show I am wondering how this may effect the World Series of Blackjack?

Hopefully it will be a plus for the WSOB and won't be replaced by more poker.

Well, I wont be watching it anymore....

GSN needs to work a better deal with DISH Network....they put GSN in an expensive package ....

Im about ready to flush DISH....I got shopping channels and religous channels and way too many paid programing channels....but les and less watchable channels.

I think they use the opposite of a survey in that they monitor the channels you mostly watch and then take your favorites and add them to the next pagkage up...

If I got GSN though, I think it will actually help Bj....Ill watch any kind of card game as long as its entertaining...heck I even watched that King of Vegas thing and I had to endure Hollywood D in that....:)

Maybe I need to get a life...

This is great news for GSN, but it may be bad news for WSOB. We'll see.
Anyway, congrats to the guys at GSN! This should be a big boost to your lineup.

    Wbt?

Well, if they host a World Poker Tour maybe Kevin could look into a

    World Blackjack Tour?

How about piggybacking the TBJPA ONTO the WPT - cross market the two and see what happens

Or even better try this one:

Whatever the WPT buy-in is charge 1/5 of that for a WBT. Hold the WBT the day B4 the WPT. BJT can be done start to finish in 1 day versus the 2-3 for poker.

If WPT buy in is 10,000 then charge 2,000 for WBT - how much do you wanna bet that some of the poker dudes would try it? Then Kevin patent the powerchip, get Burger King to sponsor the WBT....

Hey this is sounding pretty good isn't it?

    Gsn

Next to the Brooke Burns ( "Dog Eat Dog") and the WSOB the WPT is a great addition. ;) Nice going GSN. WPT has set the bar for TV gambling shows and has yet to be matched IMO. I hope they leave it as it has been.

The UBT show on CBS crushed the WPT in ratings,it wasn't even close. What bar are you talking about?................. Barneys Pub :joker:

Their ratings may have been the reason that the Travel Channel gave up on it.But with Kevin Belinkoff at the wheel he will find a way to make the show much better,he unlike the Travel Channel has a good understanding of shows that are gambling related.Good luck Kevin and GSN in your new show.I will be watching, but just not from Barneys bar. ;)

Am affraid I'd have to bet on WPT...

Since the WPT is a show that is bought by the network and UBT is a show that has to pay for the network to show it, I'd have to believe the WPT is the more popular show. I am not knocking UBT, only disagreeing with you over which show is more popular.

I could be wrong, but I can't see the networks handling this way if that is not correct.

How is the popularity of a show affected by the deal between the network and the owners of the show?

How are the ratings of a show affected by the agreed contract between both parties

The ratings speak for themselves and the UBT show was the highest rated CBS show in that time-slot.EVER

The WPT gets ratings between .2 to .5

The UBT show was achieving ratings between 1.0 to as high as 1.5

WGN which is showing season 1 of UBT on Sunday nights purchased the rights to show these shows. They were not paid to air these shows.

Keep in mind that the WSOB is owned by GSN so they are paying to air they show also? All commercial revenue collected by GSN offsets their production cost.UBT has that same perk, they not only do that plus they have total control of the ads and they collect all the ad money during the show.

With WGN they paid for the UBT show up front so they WGN collect the ad money. The particulars of a business deal has no effect on how the viewing public accepts the show and its content.

CBS loved season one so much that they have delayed the showing of season 2 of the UBT so it may be shown during "Sweeps Week".That alone says what CBS thinks of the potential of The UBT Tour Show.Sweeps week is reserved for the networks top shows that they believe are the shows that the general public want to see.

So when you say "I could be wrong",you are correct you are WRONG 100% wrong.

The jury has spoken and its clear they like the UBT Show almost 3 times as much as the WPT.

TV viewers with Nielsen boxers are not tournament players. They are TV viewers who's opinions the networks and sponsors pay attention too.

I dont for one second believe that UBT on CBS is more popular than WPT on travel channel. I believe CBS has a static ratings near UBT success rate. I believe, as usual, you exaggerate and glorify that which lines with you. The UBT show on CBS was good, the WSOB was good, but the WPT is the best gambling show there is IMHO. Here is the key to this puzzle. UBT has two sponsors, Bet21 and sharkman DVD. sharkman DVD sells off videos with all the poker on Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth. Annie and Phil are UBT team players. My guess, its just a guess now, the owner of sharkman dvd page is a partner with bet21 or UBT more than likely bet21 out of LV. This means UBT about zero external sponsorship.

I ask you Joe, was UBT on CBS a paid infomercial?

The best card game on TV is without at doubt "Play Your Cards Right" with Bruce Forsythe. "Is it higher or lower than a 6?" Brucie Rules!

    Joe,

I think you’re comparing apples and oranges.

The rating that UBT got on CBS were great for that network and time.

The rating that WPT got for Travel Channel were good poker on Travel was a stupid fit.

Now having said that even though WPT was on the wrong network it still did well and with GSN taking over it is a coup in my opinion. The problem with GSN is that the availability of the network is even more limited that the Travel Channel.

To make analogies between networks and shopping:
    CBS = Super Wal-Mart
    Travel Channel = Krogers
    GSN = Publix

All the above are grocery stores but I doubt many here have heard of Publix – it’s based in Lakeland Florida and in FL Publix is the #1 grocery store.

Now, if UBT were on the Travel Channel I believe that it’s rating would have been much lower than that of the WPT. Why? It was a season one production, no public familiarity and it needs to be tweaked to make it more viewer friendly. (my TV critique)

Next season I would expect the ratings for WPT to drop further simply because fewer people have the GSN in their TV packages.

What would be the best for TBJ would be for GSN to place WSOB right after WPT.

In summation trying to compare UBT ratings on CBS to WPT ratings on GSN is like comparing BJ to Pai Gow. The only thing they have in common is they’re played in casinos.

    Other factors to consider:

UBT on CBS was really a slick infomercial. Lets face it anytime you pay for production AND pay for airtime it’s an ADVERTISMENT.

CBS took a chance that UBT would be a bomb but since they were being PAID to air the program the chance was minimal.

Now here’s the real clue. Is UBT PAYING CBS to air season 2? I certainly hope not, especially with the ratings that UBT pulled in.

Only time will tell – I’m rooting for UBT so that maybe they can get enough money to give Bet21.com a loan :joker:

  15. For me, moving WPT to GSN is great news. Our cable system doesn't carry the Travel Channel but does carry GSN. This will be my first chance to watch WPT and I am looking forward. I was also glad to see that WGN is carrying reruns of UPT. Of course our cable system has CBS, but our local affiliate didn't see the potential of a blackjack show and pre-empted UPT for other sports programming every time it was scheduled to air. At least now I can check it out on WGN. More good news.

Well its all about finding the right match with networks as for any of these shows success...

CBS is certainly the big gun but the time slot for UBT is normally a dead one anyway ...rodeo and college BB led in by boring infomercials...

Actually I might consider GSN upgrade if they would rerun UBT...that would have been a great match... but GSN needs to get rid of the "Old Foggey" image. Maybe this poker move will help...
WSOBJ and UBT shouldnt compete. Rather they should join forces and plaster the BJ everywhere they can...this works for poker as you can find it many different placess while surfing....

How about some Spike TV BJ...or ESPN has to have some soft spots with all the 1,2 3 levels...

The move of Poker to GSN may help that network especially if they are loading up a casino type theme...and then certainly BJ should fill in there...but they would be smart to work a deal for UBT reruns as well....its not about comptition...it about saturation....

Then I may pony up the extra 300 or so for a years bonus package of sat service...now theres the business....they took everything bad about cable and added to it....lol

    Friendly $100 bet

I can only think about all the money UBT is losing by not selling merchandise like UBT chip sets, tabletops, shirts, and caps like the WPT has done. Being more popular the UBT must be losing a fortune.

Let me know if you want to bet?

Really when is Sweeps week? Since UBT season two can't be complete until after the November Championship finals and then they have to edit the show I would think that is why they are delaying the 2nd season, maybe until it is completed? Right now how many 2nd season shows do they have?

Rick the more you speak without knowing the TRUE facts the less you words will be taken seriously.

Fact # 1 Sweeps week is in Sept I believe and CBS has delayed the premier of season 2 till then, their request not UBT.

Fact #2 Most of the shows slated for season 2 were already filmed in January in L.A .They are being edited and voice-overs right now, since the original plan was to show these in June 2007.

Fact # 3 Some shows that are going to be shown in Season 3 have already been filmed.

Fact #4 When you guess and think about something that you have no knowledge of its always going to be wrong unless you guessed right, and chances are you guessed wrong.;)

So UBT won't be showing in June as originally planned?

So is season 2 finished then? So the upcoming Palm event will be Season 3? I'll have to wait until 2008 to get my face on tv then? [PS America's Most Wanted doesn't count!] :joker:
