    Day #1

Two of our fellow BJ players are still in at the end of day one.

    Blair Rodman.........$19,900
    Richard Pace.........$10,625

    Day #2

Only one left, Blair and he made a major move winning over $138,000 on day two.

    Blair Rodman.........$157,900

Blair is currently in 42nd place out of 277 remaining players out of over 2500 that started this years tournament.

At one point they said players were busting out one every minute.

The top Celebrity player was Laura Prepon who plays Donna on "That 70's Show". She made the top 500 (top 20%) which is great and even more amazing is that she only started playing poker four months ago.

Last years champion Chris Moneymaker was eliminated in day one when his full house 999/KK's were beat by KKK/99's.

I will update Day three tomorrow.

2004 35TH ANNUAL WORLD SERIES OF POKER BINION'S HORSESHOE CASINO
    LAS VEGAS, NV
Event: No-Limit Hold'em World Championship Day 3 Chip Count
    Buy-in: $10,000
    Number of Entries: 2576
    Total Prize Pool: $24,214,400

    No-Limit Hold'em World Championship - Day Three
    by BJ Nemeth

Welcome to Day Three -- the money day.

Play began at 12 noon with 277 players left, and the top 225 finishers receive prize money. So all you had to do was outlast 52 more people, and you were guaranteed at least $10,000. While that might not sound like much when it costs ten grand to enter, most players earned their entry through a satellite, so that would still represent a sizable profit.
As you'd expect, most people tightened up their play as the number of players crept down toward 225. The 227th player didn't bust out until right before a break, leaving 226 people left. Out of those 226 players, only one of them would leave the tournament empty-handed. Suddenly, every hand they played was worth at least $10,000 -- not in tournament chips, but in real, honest-to-God, able-to-pay-the-mortgage, money.
When the fifteen-minute break was over, they stopped the tournament clock and proceeded to play one hand at a time for the entire room. Every table would play one hand, and when it was finished, each dealer would raise their arm to signal their table was ready for the next one. It averaged five minutes a hand as the entire room slowly progressed from hand #1 to hand #2 and so on.
Any time there was an all-in bet, the dealer would call it out loud, and ESPN's cameras would surround the table to record the action. The announcer would call the action over the loudspeaker so the fans could tell what was happening, and everybody in the room (players and fans alike) was hoping for someone to get eliminated. So anytime a short-stacked player was all-in, he had the entire crowd against him. Talk about pressure. But time after time, the short-stacked player came out victorious, doubling up rather than busting out.
During hand #5, a short-stacked player announced that he was all-in, only to find three other callers behind him. Everyone was certain that this would be it, and everyone else would finish in the money. Because of the side pot, nobody knew his hand until after the river card, but when it was finally announced that he had pocket jacks that nobody could beat, he quadrupled his chips. Rather than going home empty-handed as Player #226, he gave himself enough chips to dream of the final table. There's one guy who won't disrespect pocket jacks anytime soon.
Finally, during hand #6, a short-stacked player couldn't make it past the river, and the crowd cheered, as he was the last player to finish outside the money. He survived all the way to Day Three, but didn't make any more money than the guy who lost his chips in the first 20 minutes of Day One.
But wait, hand #6 wasn't officially over! There was another all-in bet that hadn't played out yet, so ESPN's cameras recorded as another player busted out. Since they were both eliminated on the same "hand," it was declared a tie, and rather than one of them getting ten grand and the other getting nothing, it was split so each player would receive $5,000.
Then Harrah's stepped in. For whatever reason -- be it sympathy, publicity, or just to see the look on the guy's face -- they decided to kick in the extra money to award each player a full $10,000. So finisher #226 went from nothing to $5,000 to $10,000 in just a few minutes.
I'm not sure if anyone should mention this to finisher #227, who "posthumously" inherits the title of last person to leave empty-handed.
Once everyone made it into the money, the players loosened up their play again. Unfortunately, Benji Grimes (who I profiled on Monday) found himself all-in with pocket eights against two other players with A-K and A-J. He was doing well until an ace fell on the river, finishing the tournament in 201st place. He can't compete with Moneymaker's Cinderella story from last year, but he happily turned $225 into $10,000.
As soon as he lost, Grimes received a small piece of paper showing that he came in 201st place, and he was directed to the line where players wait to receive their winnings. The players collectively referred to it as the "loser's area," but I think those who busted out before them would disagree. Losers don't walk out of a casino with that much money.
After waiting in line and sharing the final bad beat story with other "losers," Grimes showed his tournament entry and photo ID to receive his winnings -- in casino chips. No, they don't receive a single $10,000 chip. Binion's breaks it down into smaller denominations (thankfully not more than a handful), hoping these players might stop at a craps table or something on the way to the cashier.
The players also receive a small form called W-2G. Unfortunately, their winnings will soon be reported to the IRS, so players might want to set a little prize money aside or else they'll receive a nasty surprise next April 15th. I can already tell you who will win the most money at this year's World Series -- Uncle Sam.
    Stay tuned.

2004 35th Annual World Series of Poker Results

    Latest Update: May 26th,

5:30 p.m. – Doyle Brunson verbally announced "all in" while the crowd was applauding action at another table, Bradley Berman was talking to another player at the time of the raise and didn't hear Doyle. So Burman said "raise," trying to buy the big blind, but after a floor decision, he was bound by it and forced to call Brunson's all in bet. Doyle flipped up pocket 10s, and Burman showed A-7 offsuit. Unfortunately, the flop came A-5-5 followed by a 3 and a jack, and that is how Doyle Brunson finished in 53rd place in 2004 WSOP

6:17pm – Chris Ferguson goes all in on an open ended straight, but he catches a king on the river to stay in the tournament and double up his chips.

Way to go Blair! $170,000 in prize winnings in just a few weeks, even with all the buy-ins I'm sure he still nets 150K. I tellya, there is MONEY IN POKER. Maybe somebody with the same passion for both games (bj and poker) like S. Yama could run a basic EV comparison between the two. I've suspected for a long time now that the base EV for poker tourneys is much higher than BJ tourneys -- especially for a skilled player. From an advantage play standpoint, it just makes sense to investigate this card game and the amazing earning potential it holds now that there are so many ploppies filling the tables all hoping to be the next Moneymaker.

As for me, a series of bad beats (and of course the occasional misread on my part) kept me from any glory at Binion's last week (except for the distinction of knocking out Lakers owner & poker player Jerry Buss in a tourney), but I have been racking it up back here in LA. Yesterday had another 5th place @ the Bike (out of 107) and Friday starts the California Poker Championships @ the Commerce Casino. So we'll see! One day I may even give Mr. Rodman a run for his money...

    WSOP day V up date!

Way to go Hollywood, good luck in the California Championship.

Here is the current WSOP up date.

Important note, last years champion "Chris Moneymaker" was amazing winning the $2,500,000 first prize from a $40 internet buy-in. But this year an even bigger story is unfolding. "John Murphy" the third day leader and currently in 6th place with $1,825,000 million in chips is only TWENTY-ONE years old.

At the worst he will win $175,000. Is it okay to hate a 21 year old...LOL. All kidding aside I would love to see him win the whole thing, just think how many players would sign up for next years event should a 21 year old win the $5,000,000.

    Go Hollywood

Nice job Dave and good luck in Cal. With you knocking out Jerry you should be in line for a celebrity invite. Be careful against Rodman 'cause if ugliness and trash talking gives any kind of an advantage then he's got you beat... well maybe only in one category.
Good luck on your "All Ins"

Oooops! I hope I didn't offend Blair. So good luck to Blair against Hollywood, (Do you think he can fix me up with Carmen Electra ?)

By the way I did my best John Madden when I gave the HMDBJIII satellite tournament presentation to both Sun Cruz and Sterling Casinos. I don't know how well it was received. I got the standard "we'll pass the idea up the ladder" response. I may need to bring you to Florida if I get the chance to promote it to the higher ups.

    12:05 AM
Glenn Hughes raises $200,000 from the button, and Marcel Luske moves all in from the big blind for $960,000 more. Luske begins stacking his chips into a giant wall in the middle of the table. Luske sips his beverage, and then takes on a very concerned expression: pursing his lips and furrowing his brow in a very obvious manner. Hughes continues to think, and Luske, apparently bored, begins cleaning his sunglasses with his tie. (From the rail, Devilfish informs him that he missed a speck of dust). Hughes studies even more, and Luske slumps back in his chair and closes his eyes as though sleeping. ("Give him a blankie!" exclaims Devilfish.) Finally, Hughes folds. He turns over 9-9 and begs Luske to show his hand. Likewise, the crowd demands to see Luske's hand. Finally, Luske relents, turns over A-J offsuit and rakes the pot as the crowd applauds.

    Michael McClain $850,000

    12:50 AM
Things have been pretty dull since Dewey Archer got busted in 11th over two hours ago. Many of the media are dreading a late night, because tomorrow's final table will certainly last until the early morning. There was one exciting moment, when Dave Williams got all in with A-Q against Josh Arieh's 10-10. Williams hit an ace on the turn and doubled up.

    1.00AM - We have a final table
Marcel Luske moved in on a flop of 3 clubs Queen high. He had two 4's in his hand with the 4 of clubs. Dan Harrington called the 700k bet with Ace clubs, Jack. A jack came on the turn and a blank on the river. Marcel finished in 10th place and we now have our final 9 player line up.

    WSOP - Final Table Bio's

We're down to the final table of this years WSOP. John Murphy the twenty-one year old busted out, but they still have four twenty something year olds in this years finals and only one non-American. Here are the Bio's on the remaning players.

World Series of Poker - Final Table Biographys

    SEAT 1: MATTIAS ANDERSSON
    Chip Count: $740,000

The only non-American to make the final table this year is Mattias Anderson, from Sweden. At age 24, he’s one of four 20-something players in the finale. Andersson previously worked as a salesman in a toy store before crafting his poker game playing on the Internet. Over the past year, he’s supported himself financially playing from his home computer. Andersson noted that “Poker School Online” at PokerPages.com helped him learn about strategy. In his spare time, he also enjoys soccer, pool, miniature golf, and other card games – including “Magic.” In fact, Andersson won the national “Magic” championship in Sweden in 2001. This is his first time to play in the World Series of Poker. Andersson’s motto: “Respect all of your fellow players and try to play your best game.”

    SEAT 2: JOSH ARIEH
    Chip Count: $3,205,000

Josh Arieh was born in Rochester, NY and now lives in Atlanta, GA. He’s a 29-year-old professional poker player who once worked as a courier for a law firm. Arieh won a gold bracelet at the World Series in 1999 – in the $3,000 buy-in Limit Hold’em event. This is his fifth year to play at the World Series – where he has cashed ten times. He started playing poker several years ago, mostly to kill time after the local pool hall closed. Arieh is married and has two children. About his life, he says, “I’m just a family man trying to make a decent living.”

    SEAT 3: AL KRUX
    Chip Count: $1,305,000

Al Krux is originally from North Carolina , but now lives near Syracuse , NY . Prior to becoming a professional poker player, Krux worked as a diamond merchant. He won a World Series gold bracelet in 1996 in the $1,500 buy-in Pot-Limit Hold’em event. He also made the final table in the main event in 1990, when he finished 6 th. Krux is married and has four children.

    SEAT 4: GREG “FOSSILMAN” RAYMER
    Chip Count: $8,215,000

The chip leader coming into the finale is Greg Raymer, a 39-year-old corporate patent attorney from Stonington, CT. Raymer is originally from North Dakota, and worked around the country before settling down with his wife and daughter in the woods of Southeastern Connecticut. Raymer’s best tournament finish was third in the main event at the World Poker Finals, back in 2001 at Foxwoods. This is his first final table at the World Series of Poker – and he comes in with a significant chip advantage at over $8 million. Raymer is known as “Fossilman,” because he collects antique fossils – which he often proudly displays on the poker table. He also has the most unusual shades in poker. Raymer’s motto: “I only appear to be wacko – in reality, I’m much worse.”

    SEAT 5: MATT DEAN
    Chip Count: $4,920,000

Dean is a 25-year-old aspiring math teacher from Woodlands, Texas – located just outside Houston. He’s currently working on getting his teaching certificate, in order to teach high school math. Dean started playing poker just one year ago. He learned to play poker online, and at his local fraternity house on the campus of Southwestern University. Dean is single and enjoys playing sports, including tennis.

    SEAT 6: DAN HARRINGTON
    Chip Count: $2,245,000

Dan Harrington is the 1995 world poker champion. He also made the final table in the main event last year – finishing third. This year’s repeat performance means he’s made three final tables within just the past ten years – a remarkable accomplishment by any measure. Harrington grew up in Boston and became a successful investor before turning to poker to make his “second fortune.” Harrington is jokingly referred to as “Action Dan,” a teasing reference to his rock-solid playing reputation. The fact is – Harrington is capable of playing many different styles and has proven to be one of the most dangerous players in the game of No-Limit Texas Hold’Em. Harrington now lives in Santa Monica, CA.

    SEAT 7: GLENN HUGHES
    Chip Count: $2,275,000

Glenn Hughes, a.k.a. “The Big Cat,” is a 38-year-old married father of two children who now lives in Scottsdale, AZ. He’s a graduate of the University of Mississippi and is now semi-retired. When Hughes isn’t spending time with his family or playing poker, he’s usually out on the golf course. Hughes has finished in the money several times here at the World Series and other tournaments, as well -- but like many of his opponents, this is his first foray onto the world’s brightest poker stage.

    SEAT 8: DAVID ANTHONY WILLIAMS
    Chip Count: $1,575,000

David Williams is the youngest player at today’s final table. His 24 th birthday comes up in just two weeks. Williams currently lives in Dallas , Texas and is currently a student at S.M.U. where he’s majoring in math and economics. He started playing poker seven years ago. Interestingly, Williams credits “The Flying Dutchman” -- Marcel Luske -- as the player who helped him most with his game. Last night past midnight , Luske busted out tenth in this event. About his future, Williams says: “I never want to have a boss. I will open my own business – if poker doesn’t work out.” Williams credits his mother who is here with him today -- who is very supportive of his decision to play poker.

    SEAT 9: MIKE McCLAIN
    Chip Count: $885,000

Mike McClain is a 39-year-old pro poker player from Lemoore , CA . He earned a BS degree in engineering and worked in the computer industry before turning pro in the East Bay area. McClain is perhaps best known for having his face shown literally hundreds of times nationally on television as the “AGONY OF DEFEAT” shot, during ESPN’s repeated World Series of Poker broadcasts last year. Perhaps this year in 2004, McClain can turn that “agony of defeat” memory into a “thrill of victory” reality. McClain is married and has two children.
