Niagara Fallsview Casino... July 29 tournament

Great! I'll see you there!

There are no problems driving across the border with cash, but you are required to declare any amount over $10k CAD when entering Canada. Right now this works out to be about $7,600 USD. When returning home to the US, you need to declare any amount over $10k USD or about $13k CAD. There is nothing illegal about carrying more than these amounts. You just need to declare it. You need not worry about it being confiscated when entering Canada. Not so sure about when returning to the US though.

Even if you are close to those amounts, you might want to at least mention it verbally when asked if you have anything to declare. I once returned home from a tournament in the USA with about $9,800 CAD in combined Canadian and US currency. I didn't declare it, because it was less than $10k. However, when they found out where I have been, they asked me how much I had and seemed a little ticked off that I didn't mention it until asked. I was taken to secondary screening where they counted the money and then let me go (with the money!).

It might be a good idea to print off this page

pick up one of the tournament brochures and rule sheets while at the casino and hold on to your table assignment tickets, hotel receipts, etc. Anything to back up your claim that you needed the money for or won the money at the casino. In the event that you win, you'll get one of those oversized cheques, which will back you up nicely. I had one of those and a trophy with me that time I came back from the US.

That reminds me -- if they pay you by cheque, that counts as currency when you cross the border.

As far as US, it is better to show that evidence that you won the money, you coming from gambling destination and preferably IRS returns from prior years showing that you paid gambling taxes. As far US, a check made in your name does not qualify as a currency. A traveler check or cashier check qualifies as currency. Although some agents might not understand the difference.

I think I'm going to this one. Any precautions need to be taken regarding currency exchange? Also, what about carrying several k (U.S.) going into Canada and hopefully more coming back into the States. Any concerns there?
Any answers appreciated!
Hey Billy,

Canadien $ is in the tank. However, the higher cost of living over there makes it about a wash. I typically try to covert a minimal amount and spend all canadien $ before I come back to US. They gladly take our $ over there, but no one takes Canadien here.
$10,000 is the max cash coming or going. You only have to declare if you have more than that and I wouldn't recommend it. The border can be a pain.
When I took 2nd late last year, I started an account there and left slot behind.
I hope you get into the tournament!! I'll look forward to seeing you there.

A lot behind, not slot.... Stinking spell correction.

Thanks guys, for the help. What can we expect for cell phone service? I have Verizon and girlfriend has US Cellular here in the midwest. Wifi?

Strong advice is to check with cell carrier. Depending on your plan, if Verizon picks up your phone on a Canadian tower then they might very well bend you over bigtime for roaming/international/whatever they call it.

I have US Cellular. My plan doesn't include Canadian roaming. Just to be on the safe side I put my phone in airplane mode before I crossed the border. But I called US Cellular and found they do give you a way to stop from roaming. You can still use your GPS. You can also stop at a Canadian wayside and take advantage of the free Wi-Fi if you need to update your GPS map or check email or something.

Good luck all of the BJT'rs!! I had to forfeit my spot as my wife is still recovering from hip replacement surgery.

I'll look forward to the reports.

Dakota represented this site well by taking 3rd place. Yours truly didn't get out of the first round. Had no luck with my one and only session. The few rebuys allowed were sold out (first guy in front of me got the last one).
This is a good event that I would go back to if it were closer.
Congratulations to Dakota!
